Neighbourhood

Dovercourt was a busy and elegant beach resort during Victorian and Edwardian times, from which it has inherited lots of interesting architecture and lighthouses. It was also the site of the popular holiday camp used for filming Hi-de-Hi! in the 1980s! These days, it is quieter in summer than other stretches of the Essex coastline, with a modest few cafes amongst the beach huts adjacent the playing fields. And nearby Hamworthy nature reserve hosts a colony of seals and rich birdlife. The blueflag beach is calm for swimming, Stand-Up paddleboards, sea kayaks etc. and doesn’t experience the rougher waves which would attract surfers. Dogs are allowed on the entire length of beach in winter, and our house is just near the start of the dog-friendly section in summer. Visitors of any age can enjoy the satisfaction of watching the sea fill the moat around your sandcastle before the tide sweeps in to overwhelm it! From the front door it is five minutes’ walk to the supermarket and Dovercourt High Street for all your needs. Walk or drive into Harwich old town to explore the historic port and a wide choice of pubs. There is also a passenger ferry across to Felixstowe.
